2012-12-01 21.01.58What a fun day! We photographed families at Kirkpatrick School with the help of the amazing Margaret & Fred Ellis. Margaret donated her time and talent to take every picture! Most of you know that she is an internationally known jewelry designer...check out her page on Facebook, Margaret Ellis Studio.

The day was made complete by Shelley Morrow (Wonderwoman) from The Well. She coordinated volunteers from her church and the coffee house and together they baked 2000 cookies and entertained the kids with face painting, coloring and singing. Her daughter and a friend were dressed as elves and were great help getting children to smile for the pictures. If you aren't familiar with The Well then you are missing out. They are a nonprofit coffee house in the heart of Green Hills located on Richard Jones Road. Have a great cup of locally roasted coffee while knowing your money is going to help others!

It's springtime in Nashville, cold weather has passed and we are enjoying the warm, sunny days.  Trees and flowers are blooming everywhere creating a kaleidescope of colors.  Spring is a time of rebirth...a promise that life goes on.

There is however, some bitter sweetness as a recently planted maple tree starts to leaf out in front of Kirkpatrick Enhanced Option School.  This tree was generously donated by Triangle Nursery and installed by Poise & Ivy.

The tree was planted in memory of 6year old Cortaviz Green who tragically lost his life in a fire the week before Christmas.  There was a beautiful dedication service attended by his family and led by the principal and staff along with Desana volunteers.  A heartbreaking tribute was given by Cortaviz's best friend.  A song and dance tribute was performed by students.  The dedication concluded with a moment of silence as everyone gathered around the tree.

We hope that as the years pass, the tree will be a gentle reminder of a young life lost too soon.

Desana has started a new photo page for the pictures from our newest project, Kirkpatrick Enhance Options School in East Nashville.

Desana volunteers, Kathi Gilleland, Kathy Houk and George Houk went along with the students and teachers of Kirkpatrick Elementary Enhanced Options School in Nashville TN as they visited a pumpkin patch. The children were so excited to get to ride the bus.... AND visit the pumpkin patch. Enjoy these photos......

katieandjennFor most of my life I have not seen much hunger, much need, much suffering. Probably because I haven't looked for it. When I made the decision to work on The Nashville Christmas project for Desana I really wasn't sure what that would entail. It did not take much probing to find that there are so many people in our community that live day to day struggling to find food, clothing and shelter for themselves and for their children. Struggling to find hope.

Some of these families in the middle of the ever present despair have found two teachers at Kirkpatrick Enhanced Option Elementary School that they can turn to. Jennifer Ward and Katie Elam do more than just teach children, they love them. With relentless enthusiasm they engage in the relationships that are vital to overcoming poverty. They bring hope.
